Nekki
This game, reportedly from Japan, has all the action of horseshoes—but uses sticks instead.
- What You Need
-
- One target stick
- Throwing sticks (a foot long)
- Slim sticks to mark the throwing lines
- Instructions
-
-
Push the tip of the target stick, called the nekki, into an area of soft earth, so the stick stands upright. Note a 10-inch stick is much harder to dislodge than a 2-foot stick.
-
Mark off the throwing lines by either drawing in the dirt or laying down thin sticks. If the players are of varying abilities, keep things competitive by having the older kids throw from farther back.
-
Each child takes a turn throwing her stick at the nekki. Try using the same sidearm, wrist-flicking motion that you use when skipping a stone across the water.

- Safety Note: A parent should oversee this game to make sure no one wanders into the target area.
