Cat and dog game ideas from FamilyFun

Cat Games

Many people assume cats are arrogant fur balls who prefer isolation. Not so! Cats crave human companionship and get depressed if you leave them alone too long. Since many felines recognize 30 to 40 words, they're also more trainable than most people realize (a loving tone and gentle body language work well, too). See if the games below don't make your cat purr.

SPIN THE BOTTLE

This game boasts two things a cat can't ignore: motion and water. Kissing is optional.

ALL YOU NEED: A clear plastic bottle (an empty soda bottle with the spin the bottle label washed off works well) and tap water

HOW TO PLAY:
1. Let your cat watch you fill the bottle halfway with water and cap it.
2. Put the bottle on a bare floor, spin it and leave the rest to your cat. He'll keep it spinning and you laughing.

VARIATIONS: Roll the bottle or stand it upright and tip gently with your finger.

REVIEW BY TABBY SMOOCH: This is a clever toy. I've played with plastic bottles before, but whatever's inside this one makes it act all funny. I can't tell which way it'll go next. I'm letting it sleep for a while, but then we're going to play for a very long time.

PAPER BAG PASSAGE

This game is heaven for kids who love constructing tunnels and for those cats who love bags (is there any other kind?).

ALL YOU NEED: Paper grocery bags, tape and a feather or pipe cleaner

bag tunnels HOW TO PLAY:
1. Cut off the bottoms of two grocery bags, then connect the bags with tape to create a tunnel.
2. To lure the cat inside, wiggle a feather or pipe cleaner at one opening.
3. Let her "capture" the object and take it inside the tunnel.
4. Retrieve the object, expand the tunnel and repeat the lure.

VARIATIONS: Roll things through the tunnel for the cat to chase, dangle toys from the opening and make scratching noises on the outside of the tunnel that your cat will follow from inside.

TIP: Cat-lovers often try to play with their pets by rolling an object toward the cat. But that doesn't make sense to a cat because prey runs away from cats, not toward them. So always roll or pull a toy away from the cat.

REVIEW BY WHITE PAWS: When you're a cat--which I am--there is really nothing on earth more fun than dark, scary places to go into. And of course, don't get me started on bags...

PUZZLE IN A BOX

Tickle your cat's fancy with a craft that offers suspense and scratching noises.

ALL YOU NEED: Four walnuts (or any other small objects that will make puzzle box some noise), an empty tissue box and tape

HOW TO PLAY:
1. Put the walnuts inside the tissue box and tape over the box's opening, leaving a hole just big enough for the cat to stick his paw inside.
2. Show kitty the box and rattle it.
3. He'll merrily push the box around with his paws, trying to figure out what's inside.

TIP: Now and then, take out the walnuts and let your cat see his "prey." You can reward dogs with praise, but cats want answers to a mystery or they get bored...or even insulted!

REVIEW BY SIAMESE HERCULES: I thought my human was losing it when I saw her making this toy. I mean, I'm supposed to be mystified by nuts in a box? But when she put it on the floor, suddenly I was mystified! I thought, "Hey, what if there's something else in there--like a mouse? I guess I better make sure." More nut boxes, please!
