Back in the '80s when Trivial Pursuit was the rage, teacher Lynn Bonsey of Surry, Maine, and her sister, Lorna Healey, came up with It's All Relative, a homemade version based on their often hilarious family history. Today the family gathers to play every Thanksgiving.
PLAYERS: Three or more
MATERIALS: Colored index cards or card stock, pens (Optional: photographs, tape recordings, game boards)
Before play begins, family members write down trivia questions that only relatives might know: "How did Billy lose his front tooth?" "What was Uncle Pete's first wife's maiden name?" and so on. For a multimedia effect, cards can also ask questions about accompanying photographs or tape recordings. (Lynn Bonsey asks her siblings to come to the Thanksgiving gathering with 30 new questions; she now has a collection of more than 700.) The game can then be played in any number of ways--individually, in teams, on a game board or just as a quiz contest. Lynn plays by giving each team a card with the words "It's All Relative" printed on it. When a player correctly answers a question, she draws from a container filled with letters printed on card stock. The first to spell the title of the game wins.
