They Had a Dream

A Web tour of the Civil Rights Movement
February is Black History Month, a time to look back and see how far we've come in the past four decades, thanks to the efforts of those leaders of the Civil Rights Movement who risked their lives to bring about change.

The Supreme Court issued the first blow against segregation in 1954. In that case, Brown vs. the Board of Education of Topeka, the Court found that the "separate but equal" doctrine, which allowed the Topeka, Kansas, school board to segregate schools by race, violated the U.S. Constitution. The decision set the stage for the end of official segregation in other areas, as well.
