Apron Cake

 From FamilyFun Magazine

Regardless of the party (though this cake is perfect for a cooking party), this dessert really takes the cake. You can make it a day before the party with the guest of honor, or turn the frosting and decorating into a party activity with the entire group.

Ingredients
  • 1 baked 13-by-9-by-2-inch rectangular cake
  • 2 to 2 1/2 cups white frosting
  • Red shoestring licorice
  • Plastic toy kitchen utensils (or other plasticware, trimmed to size)
  • 1 tube colored decorators' icing
X

Instructions
  1. Set the baked cake on a serving platter and cut away the upper corners to form an apron shape. Frost the cake with the white frosting. Stick shoestring licorice into the top of the cake to form the neck strap and into the sides of the cake to form the apron strings. Then outline the entire apron with licorice.

  2. Stick a tiny plastic fork and spoon into the apron in the lower left-hand side of the cake. Using the decorators' icing and a writing tip, outline the shape of the pocket as a guide, with the utensils poking out the top. Form the pocket with a mound of decorators' icing and smooth out well. Use the icing to write "What's Cooking?" on the front of the apron. Serve with ice cream. Serves 10 to 12.
