Fun Projects with Food for Kids

by Susan G. Purdy

BANANA BUG

Now here's a critter with real "a-peel." Have your kids make legs and antennae by poking pretzel sticks into a not-too-ripe banana. Use peanut butter for eyes and for gluing on a raisin spine--then watch your kids devour the bugs, one leg at a time.

FRUIT FLOWERS

Invite your child to plant these "berry" delicious flowers on his or her plate. For the flower center, use a slice of banana or kiwi. Arrange raspberry or strawberry petals around it, then add a shoestring-licorice stem with real mint leaves.

GRAPEFRUIT GALS

These sourpusses are a clever way to slip vitamin C into your child's diet. Cut a 1/4-inch-thick slice from a grapefruit and set it flat on a plate.

Arrange red or green grape clusters around the top for hair. Add red grape eyes, a maraschino cherry nose and a big grin made of raisins or bananas.
