A beguiling blend of science and art, printmaking has always appealed to those who love processes. To become a Kitchen Table printmaker, it also helps if you love processed cheese.

Carrot Printing

MATERIALS

Carrots
Food coloring
Water
Cheese slices

TOOLS

Paring knife

Cut the top off a thick carrot, leaving a flat, even surface. With the point of a paring knife, etch a shape such as a heart or star, then cut away the carrot, leaving the shape in relief (adult artists only). Dab the carved carrots into a saucer of diluted food coloring (2 drops per tablespoon of water), then stamp on slices of cheese to make prints. If your art is for public consumption, be sure to eat it promptly.

TIPS: For a more natural look (and taste), try printing with beet juice, mustard, ketchup or other colorful condiments.

REVIEWERS' COMMENTS: "It's like wrapping paper for a hot dog." "I want to see an orange and a lemon print."
