your own bread?" incredulous friends ask me. They imagine, I suppose, a Herculean effort in the kitchen. In fact, making bread takes little time and--if it's as habitual as it is in this household--little effort.
When treated properly, a yeast dough is very easy to work with and can be made to suit your schedule. (It can be left overnight in the refrigerator and then pushed around later if it's being uncooperative.)
The yeast bread recipe included here, as pleasurable to make as it is to consume, is a staple in our home. So is the banana bread (also known aptly as quick bread) that we eat for breakfast or, better yet, tea time.
I've also added our recipe for pretzels and biscuits because they are easily mastered by children. After the first supervised attempt, they'll be able to make a contribution to family meals and say honestly: "We made these all by ourselves."
