Flour Power

Bread basics from FamilyFun

Making your own mix means that you or your children can make biscuits for dinner at the drop of a hat. Here's a recipe for a mix you can store in your refrigerator that will make about six batches of biscuits.

Ingredients

6 cups sifted unbleached flour
3 tbsp. baking powder
3 tsp. salt
1 1/2 cups butter or margarine

Directions

Thoroughly mix the dry ingredients by sifting a few times. Cut in the butter or margarine, working the dough until it looks like slightly lumpy corn meal. Store the mixture in covered Mason jars.

When it's time to make biscuits, add 1/4 cup buttermilk, plain yogurt, or sour cream to one cup of your biscuit mix.

Turn the soft dough onto a floured board and knead lightly. Roll out to about 1/2-inch thickness and cut into 2-inch circles. Press the scraps together, roll, and repeat until all the dough is used.

Bake at 450 degrees on an ungreased cookie sheet for 12 minutes.

If your oven has a light, your kids can watch them rise. This recipe makes about six biscuits.
