Hats Off to Thanksgiving

A "My Great Idea" from FamilyFun

Last Thanksgiving, when I needed a quick snack for my son's first grade class, I made Pilgrim hat cupcakes. I simply prepared a cake mix and filled ice-cream cones a little more than halfway with the batter. I stood the cones in muffin tins and baked them according to the cupcake directions on the box. Meanwhile, I made the Pilgrim hat adornments--a quarter-inch-wide strip of black construction paper long enough to wrap around the wide part of each cone and a yellow paper buckle. Once the cupcakes cooled, I turned them over, cupcake-side down, on a platter and taped the strips and buckles in place around the bottom edge of each cone. As I handed the cupcakes out, I turned the cones over and frosted them. The kids loved the hats and even kept the paper strips as souvenirs.
