Pack School Lunches with Punch

Smart, snazzy ideas from FamilyFun

Star Shaped Sandwich Hundreds of FAMILYFUN readers transform their kids' sandwiches into fun food by slicing them with cookie cutters. But Mary Anne DeZur of Oshkosh, Wisconsin, has actually tested the method.

Her results? Day 1: Nutritious sandwich came back home--one bite taken. Day 2: Identical sandwich cut in a bear shape--gone. "Mom, I loved that sandwich!" exclaimed her kids, Louie, six, and Sami, 10. "Can I have another tomorrow?"

Now this technique is part of Mary Anne's regular routine. She precuts all her bread once a week and stores the shaped pieces in the freezer, ready for morning lunch making. She dries the crusts in the oven and turns them into bread crumbs, or scatters them outside for the birds.

After four years, she has amassed a huge collection of cookie cutters. She also has perfected her monthly strategy: three weeks of shaped sandwiches, followed by a week of regular sandwiches "just so they really miss it," she says.
