Celebrate African-American History Month

Food and crafts that spotlight African world culture from FamilyFun

Ways to Celebrate African-American History

•Play wari (also known as mankala), the ancient African board game.

• With older kids, rent (WGBH Boston Video, 1998), the four-part public television series that recounts the history of slavery. Watch and discuss one segment each week. Check out the series' Web site at www.pbs.org/wgbh/aia/home.html.

•Make greeting cards that feature facts about African-American history and culture or quotations from African-American writers.

• Play a traditional African-American ring or clapping game such as Brown Girl in the Ring or Miss Mary Mack.

• Explore the subject through a good children's book or the Encarta Africana CD-ROM.

• Take an African-American Heritage walking tour. Many cities and towns now offer them.
