Total Time Needed:
2-3 Hours

Tired of tripping over a perennially shifting pile of sneakers and snow boots? This easy-to-use "toe first" shelving lets footgear air-dry and can be sized to fit any stretch of wall. We spaced our shelves using 3-inch L brackets, perfect for boots, larger kids? shoes (size 1 and up), and adult shoes. For stowing smaller shoes, use 2 1/2-inch L brackets to hang some or all of the shelves.

Materials
  • Four precut 36-inch-long 1/2- by 3-inch boards (or longer 1 by 4 boards cut to fit)
  • Sandpaper, primer, and paint
  • 1/2-inch wood screws
  • L brackets (2 1/2 inches or 3 inches) to fit your family's shoes ? see instructions
  • Level and pencil
  • Drywall anchors (or appropriate anchoring hardware for your wall)

Instructions
  1. If needed, cut the boards to fit your wall, then lightly sand, prime, and paint them.

  2. Use the wood screws to attach an L bracket to each board 3 inches in from each end. (If you're not using drywall anchors, position the brackets to align with the wall's studs.) For a shelf longer than 36 inches, add another L bracket at the center.

  3. Position the lowest board on the wall, with the L brackets pointing down and flat against the wall. Check it with a level and mark the bracket holes with a pencil.

  4. Install the shelf using anchoring hardware. Repeat to hang the other boards above the first,
using the L brackets as spacers.
