Kids have long known that a bike is more than just a way to get around--it's a ticket to adventure. With just a little planning, your whole family can recapture that spirit as you set off to explore your town on two wheels.
First, using a local street map as a guide, chart a bike route that will take you past areas of interest: ponds, parks, forests and so on. Make sure the route isn't too ambitious--ten miles should be enough for small pedalers--and, if you have time, drive it first to make sure the road is safe for bikes. Next, pack some essentials: your map, some snacks, maybe a Frisbee and plenty of water.
As you set out, remember, this isn't a race. It's a chance to enjoy your town and each other's company. Make frequent stops and keep your eyes open for the sights along the way--a scenic farmhouse, a field of wild flowers, a picnic spot you never noticed before. For your efforts, on the way home treat yourself to something cold from your favorite ice-cream stand. (That's what we meant by a little planning!)
