To us die-hard minivan families, the convertible is the ultimate in automotive decadence. Which is exactly why it's such a kick to rent one for a day. What other $75 (or so) splurge gives you not only wind-in-your-hair, sun-in-your-face thrills but a whole new fun-loving image as well?
With the roof down and the sun streaming in, just cruising around your own hometown becomes an adventure. Still, you'll want to maximize your mileage and head out on a bona fide road trip. We suggest drawing up a list of destinations so you'll always have somewhere else to go: start, say, with a scenic drive to a beach or lake, then take off for a picnic lunch at a local park, a round of miniature golf in a nearby town and a thirst-quenching stop at a drive-up restaurant for an icy mug of root beer. To cap off the day, watch the sun set from your favorite roadside overlook, then head to a drive-in (if you're lucky enough to have one in your area) and watch a movie under a blanket of stars.
Decadent, yes. But the minivan will still be there in the morning.
MONEY SAVER: Rates for convertibles vary widely depending on the date, location and availability. It definitely pays to shop around. Ask car rental companies (such as Hertz, which has a big fleet of convertibles; 800-654-3131) if they're featuring coupons in local newspapers or magazines, and see if they offer discount rates for any clubs you belong to, such as AAA.
