Experience the Grand Canyon Question We would like to go to the Grand Canyon with grandparents and 3- to 10-year-olds in September or late October. Are there enough things left to do that late in the season to keep everyone occupied?

Answer What a grand idea...visiting the Grand Canyon is one of America's classic, must-do trips that we think every family should take. And what a lovely idea to make it a multi-generational experience. Fall is a great time to visit; the weather is fine and the crowds have thinned from the summer throngs--but certainly not cleared. The South Rim visitor center, museums, restaurants, and lodging are open year-round. It's essential to make reservations as far in advance as possible. Call Xanterra Parks & Resorts at (303) 297-2757. You can also make reservations online at Grand Canyon Lodges. There are also a number of accommodations outside the park. In-park lodging on the North Rim is only open until mid-October.

You won't be able to see it all--the canyon is 277 miles long, 18 miles wide, and a mile deep, surrounded by the million-plus-acre Grand Canyon National Park. Start first by contacting park headquarters for general information on programs and attractions by calling (928) 638-7888 or by clicking here. Stop by the South Rim headquarters for a copy of The Guide. This will list daily programs and activities in the park. You'll find a variety of free ranger-led programs to choose from; the kids may want to check out the Junior Ranger program. A brochure outlines what they must do during their visit to the Canyon to earn their own ranger badge. You'll find plenty of day hiking (rangers can guide you to the best kid-friendly walks in the park).

Many spectacular overlooks are accessible by car. Take the Desert View Drive, open year-round, for great views into the canyon. Or hop the park's free shuttle for a scenic trip down Hermits Rest Road. Stop by the Yavapai Observation Station, open year-round, for plunging canyon and Colorado River views. For a once-in-a-lifetime experience, take an airplane or helicopter ride over the canyon. Mule trips into the canyon and river rafting are very popular but generally reserved for adults or older children.

Make those fall trip plans now--and have a grand 'ole time!
