A Toddler-Friendly Resort in Toronto

A family destination with cultural flair

by Jeanne Muchnick
When planning a vacation with young children, parents typically put the needs of the kids first. But it doesn't have to be that way.

In an attempt to draw more family travelers, many hotels and resorts across the U.S. and Canada now offer activities for every member of the family: while the kids are playing, Dad can golf while Mom enjoys a facial. Later, parents can enjoy a relaxing, romantic dinner without interruption. Don't worry, your kids will be so busy listening to stories, playing parachute games and meeting new friends, they'll hardly miss you.

If you're looking for a great family getaway with close proximity to cultural affairs, the Delta Chelsea Inn in Toronto offers many creative programs for your children as well as theater and shopping for you.

DELTA CHELSEA INN

TORONTO, ONTARIO
This plush, downtown hotel is close to theaters, nightlife and shopping and also offers an extensive children's program.

What's there for you: This is a great way to mix business with pleasure. The inn is close to theaters and the famed Eaton Centre Shopping Area, and offers a variety of theater packages.

What's there for kids: The Delta Kids program caters to kids three (potty-trained) and older. The Creative Center is filled with crafts, developmental toys, games and videos, as well as live animals including rabbits, fish and guinea pigs. There's also a swim program called Delta Dolphins which helps teach youngsters to swim (along with a child-only indoor pool). Children can join in these activities for 2 1/2 hours at no cost. After that, the fee is $5. There's also a special kid's check-in where children will receive a goody bag.

Seasonality: Open year-round

Ratio of caregivers to children: One-to-three

Worth special mention: The hotel's life-size mascot, Chelsea Chum Bear, is available to greet young guests on the weekends. The hotel also offers special packages which allow parents to go to the theater and pay only $25 for a baby-sitter to watch their children (up to four kids). Kids six and under eat for free and the hotel will accommodate special meal requests. Be sure to request a Family Fun Room. These are filled with child-friendly items like a VCR, kid's videos, fresh cookies, free stroller use and child-proofing kits.

Cost: About $165 per night
