Glenda's Bread Pudding

 Recipes From Families

From the kitchen of Glenda Quevedo, Miami, Florida

Ingredients
  • 3 cups milk
  • 4 1/2 cups sugar
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 1/2 stick of butter
  • Dash of salt
  • 4 cups white loaf bread(you can use the whole loaf)
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 5 whole eggs
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 2 tbsp. whiskey or brandy
  • 1 can fruit cocktail, drained (optional)
  • 1/2 cup raisins (optional; I prefer Dole, because
  • they are softer and tastier)
X

Instructions
  1. In a saucepan, boil milk with 1 1/2 cups sugar, cinnamon sticks, butter and salt. Remove the cinnamon sticks right after the milk boils.

  2. Cut the bread in small pieces (use fresh or week-old bread, it doesn't matter), and place them in a large bowl.

  3. In a separate bowl, beat the eggs. Pour the hot milk mixture over the bread, adding the eggs and the rest of the ingredients.

  4. In a frying pan, pour 3 cups of sugar and let it melt, stirring constantly. When you see a cleared ring around, it is ready. Pour it in a baking pan, covering as much as possible. Pour in the pudding mixture.

  5. Cover the baking pan, and bake pudding in a 375-degree oven for 30 minutes. Remove the cover and return the pan to the oven to cook for 5 to 10 more minutes (until a toothpick inserted in the center of the pudding comes out clean).

  6. Serve pudding cold and garnished with fruit cocktail, pears or any other fruit.
