How on earth did we choose the 20 winners? We looked for travel ideas with a spark, the kind that made us want to pack up the car and hit the open road. We looked for letters that described new ways to enjoy classic spots or those that tipped us off to places rarely celebrated in guidebooks, such as the old-fashioned resort that hosts family reunions, or the little-known state park where the river and natural pools are just right for floating. In the process, we discovered Carpinteria State Beach, California, a coastal treasure boasting natural beauty and some of the ocean's most curious and wonderful creatures.
CALIFORNIA
CARPINTERIA STATE BEACHThe Hedman family is proof that a seaside vacation needn't break the bank. For just $17 per night, Californians Tracy and Brent Hedman and their five boys camp by the surf at Carpinteria State Beach, one of their state's most family-friendly beaches. Just a stone's throw from Santa Barbara, Carpinteria is known for its clean sand, gentle waves, seaside tent sites and ranger-led family programs (such as a bug walk). The Hedmans even have a tide-pooling tip: "Go early in the morning," writes Tracy, "and you'll find all kinds of starfish and crabs." Plus, she adds, you may catch harbor seals at their morning bath. Campsites at Carpinteria State Beach range from $18 to $29. Call 800-444-7275.
