Canyon Country

Tips and tactics for family trips to America's red-rock wilderness

Bryce Canyon

"Bryce Canyon is just a fairyland of towering spires! Our favorite hike is Navajo Loop, which starts with a series of downhill switchbacks that fascinate my kids (now ages 8 and 13). At the bottom, narrow trails wind through steep canyon walls and under giant fir trees. The trail is just over a mile round-trip, and my kids have been able to walk it with a few rest stops since they were 4 years old."

"Bryce Canyon National Park is stunning! We had no idea what Utah was like and felt like explorers discovering something no one knew about. We stayed in a park cabin, which didn't have a TV and was cozy for the four of us, but that's what makes vacations special -- and we got to play cards with our kids. Plus, staying in the park meant we could just hop right out of bed to see the sunrise over the rock formations, which was very cool."
