a family-friendly atmosphere and a great deal. So, when the magazine's editors wanted to find out about top family ski areas, they knew who to ask--and got a small avalanche of recommendations. As suspected, many of the readers favor lesser-known areas offering short lift lines and affordable tickets. And they'd rather have a good ski school and a cheerful staff than black diamond runs and four-star amenities. So, if you're thinking of hitting the slopes, Big Powderhorn Mountain in Michigan offers great deals and welcomes you with a friendly, helpful staff.
BIG POWDERHORN MOUNTAIN
BESSEMER, MICHIGAN: The McKinch family of Milwaukee has been skiing Big Powderhorn for years, returning each winter with other families to rent one of many condos and chalets right on the slopes. This prime location is, according to mom Elise, "a must with small children." Families can ski out their back door rather than lug equipment and kids around. Big Powderhorn's friendly and helpful staff, which seems willing to do anything to make vacations fun and easy for families, is another reason the McKinches give it high ratings. March 1 through closing: Kids 12 & under Ski Free! Lift tickets are $36 for adults, $30 for kids ages 13 to 17, $24 for kids ages seven to 12 and free for kids ages six and under.
