When it comes to vacations, FAMILYFUN readers value a family-friendly atmosphere and a great deal. So, when the magazine's editors wanted to find out about top family ski areas, they knew who to ask--and got a small avalanche of recommendations. As suspected, many of the readers favor lesser-known areas offering short lift lines and affordable tickets. And they'd rather have a good ski school and a cheerful staff than black diamond runs and four-star amenities. So, if you're thinking of hitting the slopes, Tyrol Basin Ski & Snowboard Area in Wisconsin is a hidden gem that your family will love.
YROL BASIN SKI & SNOWBOARD AREA
MOUNT HOREB, WISCONSIN: Bud and Jane Busch of Cross Plains, Wisconsin, think this relaxed mountain is one of the best-kept secrets in the state. Tyrol Basin's appeal to the Busches and their sons, Eric and Ross, is the many discounts for skiing families. A bonus for families is free lift tickets and reduced prices on rentals for kids five and under. Although the mountain is small and uncrowded, Tyrol Basin is well known for its Halfpipe, one of the Midwest's biggest snowboarding attractions and a favorite of the Busch boys. All-day lift tickets on weekends and holidays are $38 for adults and $28.50 for kids ages six to 12. All-day Tickets are $15 for all visitors on weekdays.
