Artrageously Fun Parks

Art Park Activities

Artrageously Fun Parks If you're headed to a sculpture park, here are a few ways to spark your kids' imaginations.

The name game   Before reading the title, ask the kids what a sculpture looks like to them (animals? people?). Have each child name the sculpture, then compare it with the name the artist chose.

Be a sculpture   Challenge each other to imitate the shape of a sculpture, whether it's a human pose or an abstract form. You'll have a laugh trying -- and create a great photo opportunity.

How'd they do that?   See if kids can guess what materials the artists used and how they shaped or assembled their artwork (the park's brochure or a docent should be able to provide the answers). Outdoor sculptures are often marvels of engineering as well as creativity!

Pocket sketches   Bring a small drawing pad for each child and suggest that he or she make sketches of some favorite sculptures. Great art inspires great art.
