Manhattan is unlike almost every other place in America in that the car is not the easiest way to get around. Instead, walking is usually the quickest way to get from one part of a neighborhood to another (and you'll have lots to see along the way). For longer distances, step off the curb and hail a cab. The ride won't be cheap (at least $10 from the Empire State Building to Wall Street, plus a $1.50 tip), but it's better than tangling with the subway system during a short stay. For those already familiar with the city or planning to spend more than a couple of days here, the cheapest way to get around is by subway and bus. Buy a Fun Pass, which gives you unlimited use of both systems for an entire day. Otherwise, each trip costs at least $1.50. Oddly, you can't buy the Fun Passes in the subway; look for them at newsstands, hotel lobbies and at the New York Convention and Visitors Bureau. Pick up free bus and subway maps at any subway station, or at visitors information centers.
