Before we had kids, Bucks County conjured up images of quaint bed-and-breakfast inns, tidy farms and antiques shops. But now that we're a foursome (with daughters Alisa and Michelle, ages four and two, respectively), the area of Pennsylvania just north of Philadelphia means one thing: Sesame Place.
With its water slides, fountain pools and cast of Muppet friends, this theme park is a big summertime draw.
My husband, Noah, and I decided to plan an August weekend around a visit to Sesame Place. Besides frolicking in Runaway Rapids and hanging out with Big Bird, we'd throw in a few history lessons too. We'd visit the spot where George Washington crossed the Delaware and explore museums and attractions that paint vivid pictures of American life before cars, TV and even theme parks.
We embarked with swimsuits, cameras and best-laid plans--until we heard the weather forecast as we crossed the Pennsylvania line. The rainiest weekend of the summer was on its way. Should we postpone it? Noah asked, the skies looming dark. No way! we mustered with General Washington's determination. We weren't about to let a little rain dampen our spirits --or our fun.
