FESTIVAL OF AMERICAN FOLKLIFE
WASHINGTON, D.C.:Tents are pitched all over the National Mall, stretching from the Washington Monument to the Capitol, for the annual Festival of American Folklife, held in late June and early July. The first of the festival's three programs features "The Mississippi Delta," especially its rich musical traditions--blues, jazz, the roots of rock 'n' roll, spirituals and gospel. There are also storytellers, decoy carvers and gardeners. "African Immigrant Folklife" brings together recent immigrants to the District of Columbia from many different African cultures to share their heritage with visitors. Lastly, rejoice with "Sacred Sounds"--choral works, mystical chants, liturgical music and other kinds of joyful noise that lift the heart and spirits heavenward. At the close of each day there are dance parties followed by concerts. It's all free. For more information, call 202-357-2700.
