Dubuque's EAGLE POINT PARK (Shiras Ave. off Rhomberg Ave., 563-589-4263 or 800-798-8844; closed in winter) is the park of all parks. Perched atop soaring cliffs overlooking one of the locks and dams of the Mississippi River, Wisconsin and Illinois (don't miss the geography lesson opportunity here), its sheer beauty is inspiring. Whether you're picnicking, playing tennis or leaf-peeking, this is the place, with playgrounds to keep climbers, sliders and swingers happy.

When days are too hot not to be wet, try FLORA PARK (2525 Green St., 563-589-4246), with its swimming pool, waterslides and kiddy pool (not to mention the climb-through octopus and fire truck). THE GALENA WATER PARK (815-777-0802; admission: $1.25 - $3.75) cools 'em down more extensively with a children's pool and play area, a mushroom fountain, and sand beaches.
