Among the antique shops and art galleries ensconced amid the historical buildings of Galena's Main Street, you'll find Galena Teddy Bear Company (815-777-9784), Ragamuffin Doll Shop (815-777-0013), fossils and Galena lead samples at The Galena Rock Shop (815-777-1611), science and nature gifts at The Curiosity Shop (815-777-3231), and free cookies and great toys at ZKidZ & Company (815-777-8697).Parking is scarce in the shopping district, so go directly to the Information Center (Bouthillier St. and Park Ave., 815-777-3557 or 800-747-9377), park for free in its lot and take the $1 shuttle or walk 10 minutes through Grant Park and over the foot bridge across the Galena River.
For serious toy buying, especially toys with wheels, head to Dyersville. Kids of all ages shop at the Ertl Toy Outlet Store (Highway 136, 563-875-2000) and other toy stores downtown.
DINING
Mealtime, Grant's Place (515 S. Main St., 815-777-3331) has a kids menu, casual grown-up selections and a Civil War theme. It occupies an 1840s granary.The Dubuque Mining Company (Kennedy Mall, 563-557-1729) serves the town's best burgers, and is located convenient to shopping and movie theaters. For the best homestyle cooking, head north of town on Balltown Road to Breitbach's Country Dining (563-552-2220) where there's catfish, prime rib and homemade pie on the menu, farming memorabilia on the walls, and history in the air.
