Worth the Trip: Where the Cows Come Home THE PLACE:   Shatto Milk Company, Osborn, Missouri, an hour's drive from Kansas City

WHO VISITED:   Lisa Kilcoyne of Oak Grove, Missouri, and her sons, Riley, age 12, and Jesse, 7

WHY THEY LOVED IT:   When the Kilcoynes took a summer outing to the Shatto Milk Company, they had no idea they were going to taste milk in flavors such as orange cream, banana, and root beer — and like them all! The 70-year-old dairy farm produces fresh milk for local stores and offers daily tours of its barns, milking parlors, and glass-bottling machinery, led by owner Leroy Shatto. Although Riley and Jesse were impressed with the equipment, they had the most fun milking a cow and bottle-feeding calves. "The staff was great with kids," says Lisa, "and the boys had such a good time, it was well worth the beautiful drive through the green Missouri hills." Tours are $5, free for ages 2 and under.
