MOOSEMAINEA
GREENVILLE, ME: Moosehead Lake, in northern Maine, didn't get its name by accident. The largest moose population in the Northeast calls this lake home. MooseMainea, held mid-May to mid-June in Greenville, Maine, celebrates the plentiful, but elusive moose. If you're looking for a close encounter with the continent's largest land mammal, your best chance will be on a guided moose safari--travel by foot, 4x4, seaplane, canoe or even camouflaged belly boat. Once you've sighted your quarry, register "your" moose on the locator board in the Visitors Center, and if you've gotten a good snapshot, enter the Moose Photo Contest. Throughout the month, there's a Moose River Canoe Race, the Tour de Moose for mountain bikers, the Moosehead Rowing Regatta and, to culminate the celebration, MooseMainea Family Fun Day, hosted by mascot Bruce the Moose. During the Family Fun Day, costumed kids can march in the Moosecapade Parade, play Pin the Antlers on the Moose and gather to hear moose tales in the Community House. Also on the day's agenda are the Mooseterpiece Craft Fair and Moosehead Lake Fly Casting Championship.
