6. Barston's Child's Play: We'll use any excuse to stop in at this favorite store. Our kids love the selection of toys and books, in particular the "spy stuff," art supplies, and array of board games. A plus for grown-ups: the staff can suggest the perfect toy for a child without ever being pushy. 5536 Connecticut Avenue NW; 202-244-3602
7. Politics and Prose: We love to read, so one of our favorite places is this amazing independent bookstore 10 blocks south of Barston's Child's Play. Hailey sums it up best: "The people there always help you find a really good book." Our kids' favorite place to read? The Rabbit Hole, a book nook set into the wall and padded with pillows. 5015 Connecticut Avenue NW; 202-364-1919

8. Austin Grill: This local Tex-Mex favorite has a few branches; the downtown location is an ideal stop after museum-hopping on the Mall. Our kids usually go for a soft chicken taco or a rice-and-bean bowl. Entrees from $9.50, kids' menu $5. Downtown D.C. location: 750 E Street NW; 202-393-3776
9. American City Diner: The Pac-Man machine and the tabletop jukeboxes are a big draw at this fun eatery in northwest D.C. (it's near Politics and Prose, mentioned above). We often drop by for lunch and milkshakes. Entrees from $9. 5532 Connecticut Avenue NW; 202-244-1949
10. Gifford's Ice Cream & Candy Company: This brand, a Washington institution since the 1930s, is sold in a few locations around town. Sample it at the cafe at the National Portrait Gallery or the Gifford's ice cream parlor in the lively center of Bethesda, Maryland, a great neighborhood for strolling, catching a movie -- and eating ice cream! Cones average $4. Bethesda location: 7237 Woodmont Avenue; 301-907-3436
