Honolulu's Beach Scene

by Diane Bair and Pamela Wright
Question We are taking a family vacation to Honolulu, Hawaii, and we're looking for fun things to do while we're there. Any ideas or suggestions? Of course we want to do water sports and the beach thing, but where?

Answer Oahu's sand-swim-snorkel-surf scene is as great as you'd expect it to be, but don't miss some of the lush green landscape that this island offers. Check out the Hawaii Nature Center, set in the rainforest near Waikiki for kid-friendly programs like a bamboo jungle hike. Or take a nature walk on your own. The Manoa Falls Trail is a favorite, taking you to a waterfall via deep-green forests.

No doubt you'll be eager to hit the surf. To get inspired, check out the Banzai Pipeline at Ehakai Beach County Park, on the North Shore, and watch the pros do it. For a lesson, head to Kuhio Beach, where surf-folk will be happy to help you get in touch with your Inner Gidget and Moondoggie. You'll pay by the hour and we warn you: kids are always quicker to pick up this sport than their parents. There are several surf shops that rent boards and offer group lessons, too. Eventually, you'll be ready to hang ten at Waikiki's legendary surf breaks like Tong's and Ricebowls.

For snorkeling, Hanauma Bay is considered tops. It's a volcanic bowl with calm waters and lots to see. Arrive early to beat the crowds. For just hanging out, Kailua Beach is lots of fun. Most days it's awesome for bodysurfing, and you can watch neophyte board sailers match their wits against wind and waves, and even have a go at it yourself.
