WHAT IT COSTS

Standard one-bed rooms, deluxe, and suites cost from $123 to $285. There's no extra charge for kids ages 16 and under, and roll-aways and cribs are free (make sure you ask for a room large enough to accommodate them, however, not all rooms have the space).

RESERVING A ROOM

You can reserve a room at El Tovar up to one year and 11 months in advance. To do so, call Xanterra Parks & Resorts at 303-297-2757, or visit their Web site. For peak periods, such as summer and holidays, try to book a year in advance as the hotel often sells out every night between mid-March and September.

FAMILY-FRIENDLY AMENITIES

The spacious lobby has four sitting areas and the one in front of the fireplace is popular in the evening. A concierge is stationed in the lobby for much of the day and can book sight-seeing tours and offer advice on good hiking spots. In the dining room, kids get their own menus and crayons. Room service is available and evening turn-down service includes mints left on your pillows.
