Many resorts with great learn-to-ski programs have enough terrain to keep intermediate and advanced skiers plenty busy. But families that have been on skis or boards for years will want a resort that offers more of a challenge. Those who feel they're up to the task should visit Taos Ski Valley, New Mexico for a taste of adventure and winter charm.
TAOS SKI VALLEY--TAOS, NEW MEXICO
In terms of the quality of instruction, Taos rates at or near the top of any list. And for good reason: 51 percent of all trails are rated "expert." For those who aren't up to the challenge, the city of Taos itself offers plenty to do and the childrens' facilities are top-notch.You won't find any crowds here, either. The small, mostly pedestrian village sleeps just under 800 and lift ticket sales are limited to just 4,800 skiers a day. This, combined with the fact that many guests stay a full week, gives the place an intimate, easygoing feel. Call 505-776-2291 for more information.
