The place: Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta in Albuquerque, New Mexico, October 4-12.
Who visited: Raissa Fitzgerald of Yonkers, New York, her husband, Mark, and their kids, Theodore, age 10, and Eliza, 8.
Why they loved it: Waking at dawn to see 700 giant balloons rise into the wide-open sky was "truly a magical feeling," says Raissa. Before the Mass Ascension, the family was able to get a basket-side view of the majestic flame-powered fliers, standing so close, explains Raissa, "you could feel the heat of their fire." Another high point: the Balloon Discovery Center, where kids can take their own sky-bound journey via a flight simulator. Families who arrive later in the day shouldn't miss the sunset Special Shape Glowdeo, featuring illuminated hot-air balloon oddities such as flying pigs and Darth Vader. A festival pass is $6 per session for adults, free for kids ages 12 and under.
While you're there: For a stunning view of the surrounding Sandia Mountain range, Raissa and her family suggest a ride on the Sandia Peak Tramway, a 10-minute drive from the fair ($17.50 for adults, $10 for kids ages 5 to 12). For more information: Call 888-422-7277 or go to balloonfiesta.com. For the Tramway, call 505-856-7325 or go to sandiapeak.com.
