San Antonio's Feasts, Fireworks, and Fiestas

An urban adventure from FamilyFun

by Diane Bair and Pamela Wright
For families looking for a new vacation spot, we have an unexpected suggestion: Visit a city. From glittering skyscrapers to colorful street vendors, the urban scene buzzes with energy and excitement. In our travels, we've discovered that visiting a city with kids doesn't have to be an expensive or difficult proposition. Our favorite places are beautiful and easy to navigate. They offer countless activities for rainy and sunny days, loads of freebies, beautiful public parks and fascinating ethnic and historic neighborhoods.

There's no doubt we think cities are special. But don't just take our word for it. We hope our written adventures will inspire you to hit the road with your family and experience the wonder of our favorite twinkling skylines, including the best place to play, San Antonio, Texas.

FEASTS, FIREWORKS AND FIESTAS

If cities were people, San Antonio would be the life of the party. The city's frequent feasts, fireworks, parades and fiestas make it a perfect place to play. Whether meandering down the San Antonio River along the popular 2 1/2-mile Paseo del Rio (River Walk) or visiting historic landmarks, such as The Alamo, visitors can experience a festive blend of Spanish, Mexican, Native American and even German cultures.

WHY FAMILIES LOVE IT

The chance to explore the legend of Davy Crockett and other figures of the Texas Revolution is irresistible for young pioneers. Most families start sightseeing at The Alamo, the shrine where 189 patriots died in 1836 while fighting for Texas' freedom from Mexico. Admission is free. Call 210-281-0710.

FRIENDLY HOTEL

The Holiday Inn Crockett Hotel, named for Davy and near The Alamo, charges about $109 nightly for a double. Call 800-HOLIDAY.

A LOCAL FAVORITE

Mi Tierra Cafe & Bakery serves up fresh Mexican food. The kids' menu starts at $4.25 for a chicken-taco plate. Open 24 hours. Call 210-225-1262.

BEST MUSEUM

The Witte Museum of History and Science has a four-level science-themed tree house filled with interactive exhibits. Admission is $5.95 for adults, $3.95 for kids ages four to 11, and free for kids ages three and under. Tuesdays 3-9P.M. admission is free for all. Call 210-357-1900.

TOP OUTDOOR FUN

At Six Flags Fiesta Texas, a 200-acre theme park, kids can enjoy adrenaline-pumping rides like The Joker's Revenge and The Boomerang. Guests who are 48 inches tall or above pay $32.95; guests under 48 inches pay $16.47. Kids under age two are admitted free. Call 800-IS-FIESTA.

DON'T LEAVE TOWN WITHOUT

Taking a Yanaguana Cruise on the San Antonio River. Yanaguana, San Antonio's Payayan Indian name, means "the clear water." The fare is $5.25 for visitors ages six and up and $1 for kids ages five and under. Call 800-417-4139.

YOU COULD SPEND A WHOLE DAY
