Discover Winter in New Hampshire

FamilyFun presents a charming New England resort

by Howard Rothman
For this snow-loving family, a winter getaway means peak experiences. We've feeding a lamb stood together atop a ski trail some two miles above sea level and marveled at the astounding 360-degree sugarcoated view that unfolded below.

My wife, Pat, who wholeheartedly shares my passion for winter, and I were eager to introduce our two daughters to the cold-weather diversions we had come to love. We plan winter breaks that allow us to enjoy the beauty and outdoor thrills of colder climates, as well as the family camaraderie that seems to accompany such destinations.

Keep in mind that, depending on how far you travel and what activities you plan, a cold-weather trip isn't necessarily cheap (ski-lift tickets, and equipment rentals, if you don't have your own, can add up). Always ask about special deals when you book your trip. You'll get the best prices with a little planning.

Options for cold-weather retreats in North America are surprisingly varied. The one described here--the Inn at East Hill Farm in Troy, New Hampshire--is one of our top choices because it combines fun family activities, spectacular scenery and excellent lodging at moderate prices.

INN AT EAST HILL FARM

The gentle pace and 19th-century grace of a picturesque New England winter has inspired everyone from Currier & Ives to Thornton Wilder. The Inn at East Hill Farm, a combination working farm and family resort in southwestern New Hampshire, is a country getaway that keeps the tradition alive for families in search of a memorable cold-weather experience.

Whether you and your kids enjoy gliding in a horse-drawn sleigh along the snow-packed trails criss-crossing this densely forested 150-acre site or relaxing back in your suite before a board game and blazing fire as fat snowflakes fall softly against the windows, East Hill delivers a combination of classic activities and contemporary facilities that should appease everyone in your clan.

The average daytime high is 36 degrees, perfect weather for tackling the well-marked cross-country trails groomed for beginners and experts alike (daily ski or snowshoe rental, $8; ski or snowshoe lessons, $10 an hour), riding the sleighs (adults, $8; kids 18 and under, $4), or just taking a walk and making snow angels. If snowfall is sparse, visitors ride horses ($18 per person, per hour; $15 for lessons). When families are ready to come inside, they skate at the indoor rink (daily skate rental, $2 per pair) or swim in the heated indoor pool.

Despite the activities, you won't forget that this tranquil oasis in the shadow of stately chickens Mount Monadnock remains an operational farm. Chickens, pigs, horses, rabbits, sheep and other full-time residents bleat and snort as children and parents visit their pens. Some families like to start the day by gathering eggs in the henhouse and helping to milk the cows and goats, and then end the day with a good-night barnyard stroll followed by oven-fresh chocolate chip cookies in the dining room.

Lodging packages include three family-style meals and comfortable accommodations in your choice of suites or rooms (daily rates: adults, $82 to $92; kids five to 17, $62 to $72; kids two to four, $31 to $36; and kids under two, free; 800-242-6495). The original white clapboard main house, where meals are served and rental gear is kept, contains a video arcade and a pair of homey communal rooms. At the end of the day, it's an excellent place for guests to play Ping-Pong or curl up on a couch by the fireplace and swap stories of their adventures.
