Escape to Maine

A three-day itinerary for southern Maine

by David A. Kelly
For several years before our children were born, my wife Alice and Ilighthouse celebrated the long-awaited beginning of summer with a Memorial Day weekend trip to Maine. We'd do grown-up things like eat delicious seafood dinners, stock up on camping supplies at L.L. Bean, stroll through postcard-perfect fishing villages, drink wine on a balcony overlooking the ocean and take walks along Maine's craggy coastline. Now that we have kids, we wanted to take them along, but weren't sure there'd be enough to do. We were delighted to find out that there was plenty to keep them busy for three days and we didn't have to give up our adult pleasures.

We started off on our weekend adventure by loading Steven, 5, and Scott, 3, into our minivan and headed "Down East" for our trip north to Maine. Read on for our day-by-day itinerary.
