How on earth did we choose the 20 winners? We looked for travel ideas with a spark, the kind that made us want to pack up the car and hit the open road. We looked for letters that described new ways to enjoy classic spots or those that tipped us off to places rarely celebrated in guidebooks, such as the old-fashioned resort that hosts family reunions, or the little-known state park where the river and natural pools are just right for floating. In the process, we discovered Chicago, Illinois, a bustling city full of exciting sights and activities.
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS
WINDY CITY WONDERSFor Joshua and Dereck Bormann of Iowa, a trip to Chicago meant a lot of firsts. To start, they swam in a rooftop pool at their downtown Best Western hotel. Then they rode the subway, saw a baseball game ("The Cubs lost," writes mom Sharon, "but it didn't matter."), watched a shark feeding at Shedd Aquarium and viewed Chicago's famed skyline, first from the top of Sears Tower, then from the deck of a boat. After such a sweet taste of city life, the Bormanns are ready for seconds. For Chicago and Illinois information, call 800-226-6632. For rates at Best Western, call 800-528-1234.
