Savvy summer vacationers know that there are beach towns, and then there are Beach Towns. The former might be near a nice slice of sand, but the real deal offers more than simply beach--it's got a variety of attractions, at least one great ice-cream stand, and above all, a relaxed family atmosphere. In a true beach town, there's no need to put on airs; flip-flops are practically formal wear, and nobody minds if kids track in a bit of sand. A stressful moment is a par four mini-golf hole, and cheap eats are the rule, not the exception.
For this year's installment of our annual beach town roundup, we've found three such laid-back getaways: a southern California surfing town, a Lake Erie shoreline loaded with kid-friendly attractions, and a history-rich community on Rhode Island's southern coast. Smear on the sunscreen and let's go!
