it's clear you've arrived someplace special. Long favored by the Hollywood set, Del Mar sustains its glamorous image through its pristine beaches, upscale shopping and tony architecture. But happily, Del Mar is also a little piece of paradise for families, where many of the best things to do cost little or nothing.
Topping that list of simple pleasures is a day at the beach. Del Mar has some of the best surfing, fishing and tide pooling in San Diego County, yet the town has kept its oceanfront free from T-shirt shops and hot dog stands. Instead, you'll find appealing spaces like Seagrove Park, a swath of grass overlooking the beach where parents can sun as kids explore the newly built playground. On the beach itself, a 3/4-mile-long quiet zone gives families some relief from Frisbee and beach-game enthusiasts.
Del Mar is just twenty miles from the attractions of San Diego, but you need not venture all that way for excitement. The town is host to what many kids say is the area's single best family event: the old-fashioned Del Mar Fair, held from mid-June through early July. Just down the coast is Torrey Pines State Reserve, where hiking trails lead through ancient groves to bluffs perched above the sea. Back in town, end the day watching the area's hot air balloonists. You can arrange for a thrilling sunset ride, but just witnessing the ascent of thirty or so balloons may be magical enough. And it doesn't cost a cent.
