It wasn't long after Atlanta burned to the ground--an event immortalized by native author Margaret Mitchell in GONE WITH THE WIND--that the city, with dignity befitting a true Southern belle, brushed itself off and rose from the ashes. Today, Atlanta is a thriving urban center, offering families a chance to check out visitor-friendly American corporations like Coca-Cola and CNN, take in historic sites, such as Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthplace and the 1996 Centennial Olympic Park and explore a host of great museums and eateries.
Fitting in all the key sights in one weekend requires some advance planning. So, with an itinerary in hand, I set out from our Knoxville, Tennessee, home with my three-year-old daughter, Samantha, and our family friend, 11-year-old Heather Davies, for a whirlwind tour of the city. We discovered that charm and good old-fashioned hospitality are not gone with the wind.
