Three Lakes received its name from a group of frustrated railroad surveyors. The surveyors attempted to run a straight line north through the timbered highlands. Instead, they came across a beautiful lake surrounded by virgin maple, and appropriately named it Maple Lake. The surveyed town line bisected the next lake encountered, so it was named Town Line Lake. Upon the third try, they encountered another lake with a range line running along the west side so they named it Range Line Lake. After running into three lakes the frustrated surveyors gave up putting a supply station aptly named "3 Lakes" where they ran into three lakes.

The Winning Submission

Three Lakes is a beautiful small town in Northern Wisconsin. It is a town my family has called our hometown since 1939 even though some of us aren't able to live here year round. Our family gathers here every year from all over the country during the summer to celebrate the 4th of July and then again in the winter either during the holidays or for one of our snowmobile outings. Our close knit downtown features many business including a coffee shop, gift shop and some great restaurants. Home to the world's largest chain of inland lakes it is a 4 season paradise.

A Word from our Winner, Janet

Certainly, Three Lakes' appeal could solely rest on its splendor. Its beauty is simple, yet so powerful. Pine trees encircle me, the cool, clean waters welcome me, and the wonder of the outdoors bring everything to perspective. Yet, to me, and my fellow townspeople, it's more. Three Lakes is inviting, a familiar friend at the coffee shop, a quaint stop on the main road for our sweet tooth, a quintessential 4th of July celebration, a park that welcomes family, friends, and visitors. Three Lakes is happy, no matter the circumstance. Three Lakes is a place of what matters most: time with family and friends, celebration of the arts, endless opportunity for outdoor fun, and the simplest of times. Three Lakes is what life is all about. Three Lakes is home.
