CHICAGO
Our Guides: The Redstone Family (parents Linda and Michael, Emily, age 10, Gillian, 9, and Nicholas, 5)Chicago boasts plenty of popular tourist spots, such as Navy Pier, Lincoln Park Zoo, and Shedd Aquarium. But with three curious kids under age 11 (and two equally curious parents), we are always on the lookout for new experiences in our Windy City. With a little digging we usually come up with something great. Here are some of our family's must-visits.
EXPLORE
1. Architectural boat tour along the Chicago River: Our kids love cruising in the shadows of the city's skyscrapers (and chowing on the snacks on board), and we all enjoy the entertaining narratives offered by the guides. Operated seasonally, these 60- to 90-minute rides provide a fun and informative glimpse into Chicago's storied history. Shoreline Sightseeing, $24 for adults, $12 for kids ages 2 to 12; 312-222-9328. Chicago Line Cruises, $34 for adults, $16 for kids ages 8 to 18; 312-527-1977
2. The Oriental Institute Museum: This site is a true treasure, tucked away on the University of Chicago campus (near the Museum of Science and Industry). It showcases thousands of artifacts from the ancient Near East. Our kids are fans of "old stuff" and are always awed by the 17-foot-tall statue of King Tut. "I love the mummies," explains 5-year-old Nicholas, "because they are super spooky." Free; suggested donation is $5 for adults, $2 for kids ages 12 and under. 1155 East 58th Street; 773-702-9514
3. Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum: We head for the hands-on exhibits in the RiverWorks area, where the kids can learn about rivers, dams, and locks (they usually leave with wet sleeves!). Next, we follow the trail behind the museum to a small playground with a spectacular view of Chicago's skyline, or walk across the street to check out the Lincoln Park Zoo.n $9 for adults, $6 for kids ages 3 to 12 (free on Thursdays). 2430 North Cannon Drive; 777-755-5100
4. North Park Village Nature Center: This 47-acre preserve is practically hidden at the busy corner of Peterson and Pulaski Roads on Chicago's northwest side (about a 20-minute drive from downtown). Visitors can follow a short loop trail through prairie, woodland, savannah, and wetland habitats native to Illinois. Emily, Gillian, and Nicholas love running over the boardwalk past a pond and seasonal pools in the wetland portion of the trail. Free. 5801 North Pulaski Road; 312-744-5472
