Seattle: A Natural Urban Getaway

An urban adventure from FamilyFun

by Diane Bair and Pamela Wright
For families looking for a new vacation spot, we have an unexpected suggestion: Visit a city. From glittering skyscrapers to colorful street vendors, the urban scene buzzes with energy and excitement. In our travels, we've discovered that visiting a city with kids doesn't have to be an expensive or difficult proposition. Our favorite places are beautiful and easy to navigate. They offer countless activities for rainy and sunny days, loads of freebies, beautiful public parks and fascinating ethnic and historic neighborhoods.

There's no doubt we think cities are special. But don't just take our word for it. We hope our written adventures will inspire you to hit the road with your family and experience the wonder of our favorite twinkling skylines, including the best big city with a small-town feel, Seattle, Washington.

A NATURAL URBAN GETAWAY

Surrounded by the lush natural beauty of mountains and water, the fast-growing metropolis of Seattle blends urban excitement with friendly informality. In keeping with the city's youthful, athletic spirit, many families rent bikes or walk while exploring Seattle's eclectic neighborhoods. The first stop is typically Pike Place Market, one of the oldest farmers' markets in the country, where you can shop, people-watch, and view the harbor's boat traffic. From there, you can explore the waterfront district (home of the Seattle Aquarium), Pioneer Square and the International District.

WHY FAMILIES LOVE IT

It's an easy city to navigate. It's fun to rent bikes, then ride to Seattle Center (call 206-684-7200), the 74-acre park surrounding the landmark Space Needle (call 206-905-2100). The park hosts free concerts, and there are amusement rides, street performers, restaurants and shops. When we're in the mood for exotic food, we visit the International District to scope out the tiny ethnic restaurants and sample some specialties we've never tried.

FRIENDLY HOTEL

The Summerfield Suites has a heated outdoor pool. Children under age 18 stay free in their parents' room. Standard room rates, including breakfast, start at $139; suites are $159 and up. Call 206-682-8282 for exact current rates.

A LOCAL FAVORITE

Ivar's Acres of Clams, on the water at Pier 54, serves up great-tasting seafood dishes in a casual setting. Call 206-624-6852.

BEST MUSEUMS

At the Pacific Science Center, kids can mingle with robotic dinosaurs. Admission is $10 for adults, $7 for children ages three to 12, and free for kids age two and under. Call 206-443-2001. The Children's Museum invites kids to roam through the streets of an indoor, child-size neighborhood. Prices are $7.50 for adults and children, $6.50 for grandparents and seniors. Call 206-441-1768.

TOP OUTDOOR FUN

Take advantage of Seattle's spectacular natural setting by hiking in the area's rain forest, kayaking among the orca whales, or sailing to the San Juan Islands. For pamphlets, call 206-461-5840.

DON'T LEAVE TOWN WITHOUT

Visiting the Elliott Bay Book Company. The store features a huge selection of kids' books and readings by children's authors throughout the year. Call 800-962-5311.

YOU COULD SPEND A WHOLE DAY

Riding the Washington State Ferries from Pier 52. Pick from 25 boats and 10 routes that cruise the area's misty waters and archipelagoes. Along the way, watch for orcas, sea lions, harbor seals and shorebirds. One-way fares for adults range from $5.40 to $7.40; kids ages five to 18 pay 70% of the regular fare. Call 206-464-6400.
