Skiing and More in Banff National Park, Canada For this snow-loving family, a winter getaway means peak experiences. We've stood together atop a ski trail some two miles above sea level and marveled at the astounding 360-degree sugarcoated view that unfolded below.

My wife, Pat, who wholeheartedly shares my passion for winter, and I were eager to introduce our two daughters to the cold-weather diversions we had come to love. We plan winter breaks that allow us to enjoy the beauty and outdoor thrills of colder climates, as well as the family camaraderie that seems to accompany such destinations.

Keep in mind that, depending on how far you travel and what activities you plan, a cold-weather trip isn't necessarily cheap (ski-lift tickets, and equipment rentals, if you don't have your own, can add up). Always ask about special deals when you book your trip. You'll get the best prices with a little planning.

Options for cold-weather retreats in North America are surprisingly varied. The one described here--Banff National Park in Alberta, Canada--is one of our top choices because it combines fun family activities, spectacular scenery and excellent lodging at moderate prices.

ALBERTA'S BANFF NATIONAL PARK

If most families haven't considered Canadian car trips in winter, it may be because they've never visited Alberta's magnificent Banff National Park. And just to clarify, we aren't suggesting driving to Banff (unless you want to), but flying into Calgary and renting a car there. Easy auto access to majestic mountains and glaciers, snow-dipped forests, daytime temperatures nudging 30 degrees and outdoor options ranging from ski runs to sleigh rides make this an ideal place to explore by car. Throw in favorable U.S. currency exchange rates and the fact that post-New Year's months are considered "bargain season," and you've got a destination that's as reasonable as it is enchanting.

Eighty miles from Calgary--which is three hours by air from Los Angeles or Chicago and about 350 miles from Great Falls in neighboring Montana--Banff is a spectacular all-season attraction. It was dedicated in 1887 as Canada's first national park after railroad builders stumbled upon the Cave and Basin Hot Springs (admission to Upper Hot Springs is $7.50 Canadian for adults, $6.50 for kids ages six to 16, kids under six are free, a family pass for two adults and two children is $23.00 Canadian; call 403-762-1515). The park's centerpiece, 770-room Banff Springs Hotel, a Scottish baronial castle tucked between towering pines and snowcapped peaks (rates start around $350 Canadian for a family of four; 800-441-1414), was opened by Canadian Pacific Railway officials soon after the park's dedication and is now a self-contained resort with 40 shops, 12 restaurants, indoor and outdoor pools, 18-hole indoor mini golf, bowling and more. It's the premier place to stay when visiting the park's southern region and adjacent Banff Townsite, which your family can explore at leisure after obtaining a Historical Walking Tour brochure from the Banff Information Centre (403-762-1550).

Lake Louise, another lake louiseFrom the Townsite it's just 36 stunning miles to >can't-miss gem nestled beneath magnificent Victoria Glacier. On its shore sits Chateau Lake Louise, a grand 497-room Swiss-Alpine hotel also built a century ago by Canadian Pacific Railway and featuring picture-postcard views and amenities like skating rinks and an indoor swimming pool (rates start at $425 Canadian; 800-441-1414). Sleigh and toboggan rides are offered nearby (booked through the hotel), and the largest ski area in Canada—the Lake Louise Ski Area--boasts all-ability terrain and lessons for those ages three and up. There are many ticket prices and options available, but a full-day adult lift ticket is $40 U.S., and kids under 12 ski for $10 per day; call 403-522-3555).

Banff offers a show well worth your American or Canadian buck: European flavor, natural splendors, outdoor activities, reasonable (even bargain!) rates, plus a language you already speak. Now that's a vacation, eh?
