Nestled on the banks of a spring-fed river, Schlitterbahn is near the historic German village of New Braunfels (the park's name means "slippery road" in German).

NUMBER OF RIDES: Fifty, on 65 acres, including a wave pool and a towering tube slide.

HIGHLIGHT FOR BIGGER KIDS: The Master Blaster, the fastest and steepest coaster-style ride, which propels you up and down dizzying six-story-high hills and valleys.

HIGHLIGHT FOR SMALLER KIDS: Climbing aboard Squirt'N'Sliden's pirate ship and sliding down its many mini slides.

Located halfway between Dallas and Fort Worth, Hurricane Harbor is adjacent to the Six Flags over Texas theme park.

NUMBER OF RIDES: Twenty-two, on 47 acres, from free-fall slides to multiple-person raft rides.

HIGHLIGHT FOR BIGGER KIDS: Atlantic Panic and Caribbean Chaos, a splashy pair of twisting, turning body flumes.

HIGHLIGHT FOR SMALLER KIDS: The one-acre shallow kids' pool, which includes a watery fortress full of cannons, fountains, geysers and waterfalls.
