Snowboarding in Waterville Valley, NH

Choosing the right resort from FamilyFun

by Pippin Ross, Barbara Rowley and Candyce Stapen
Skiing Skiing and snowboarding are lifelong sports the whole family can enjoy while staying fit. Several years ago the ski industry realized that to stay alive, it needed to embrace the younger generation. Opening the slopes to snowboarders and new "ski and play" instruction methods has ensured a new generation of enthusiasts and made it easier than ever for parents to get their kids onto the hills.

Snowboarding is the fastest-growing segment of the ski industry with an estimated 80 percent of kids opting for it over skiing. Resorts are wise to this boom and most now allow snowboarders.

If you or your kids are interested in snowboarding, be sure the resort you choose allows access to the majority of its trails. You should also make sure that rental equipment and instruction is available for all ages and sizes. Often, but not always, areas with good children's ski programs also feature good snowboarding programs.

One great resort that tops the charts and guarantees to keep the kids and teens entertained on and off the slopes is Waterville Valley, New Hampshire.

WATERVILLE VALLEY--
WATERVILLE VALLEY, NEW HAMPSHIRE

Waterville, also known as Mount Tecumseh, was established as a family resort long before it became fashionable. A broad, low, intermediate mountain, Waterville is recognized for its year-round kid and teen programs and its friendly, low-key atmosphere. The resort has three standout family features: a shuttle bus that runs among lodges, lifts and condos; a covered, hockey-size skating rink; and a massive fitness center with indoor pool.

Waterville is also big on boarding. The resort recently unveiled Snow Mountain, the first snowboarders-only area in the East. The Boneyard snowboard park keeps riders happy with rails, tabletops and quarter-pipes and half-pipes once the snow season is in full swing. Waterville features comprehensive ski programs for ages three and older. Call 800-468-2553 for more details or click here.
