Surf's Up — in Delaware

Learn to Ride the Waves with FamilyFun

by Colleen Dunn Bates
At two o'clock on a sunny afternoon, Jack and Will Sanford hang out next to their surfboards. They stare out at the waves, mutter a bit of surf slang and wear their red trunks with just the right slouch. For all intents and purposes, they're your typical surf bums. There's just one problem--they can't surf.

In a few days, though, the Sanford boys will be "shredding" with the best of them. Well, maybe not shredding, but certainly catching waves, standing up and getting psyched on this thrilling sport, thanks to this Delaware surf camp.

If "hanging 10" appeals to your family's wild side, fear not: You don't have to go all the way to Hawaii to pick up the basics. This mainland surf camp offers quality pro instruction (and great waves) at affordable rates. So, no excuses--get out there and shred!

SURF SESSIONS

FENWICK ISLAND, DELAWARE
You could count the number of East Coast surf camps on one hand. Actually, you could count them on one finger. Thankfully, Surf Sessions is an excellent choice. At weeklong camps on Delaware's Fenwick Island, campers can stay in ocean-view apartments while learning to ride the waves. Single, full- and half-day lessons are available. Call 302-539-2126 for more information.
