The Edge of Africa

A walk on the wild side with FamilyFun

by Candyce H. Stapen
Zoos are roaring into the 21st century with a fresh philosophy and vision that make them extra appealing for visiting families. Long gone are the days when animals were displayed in cages like sideshow oddities. At the newest exhibits, creatures are given the royal treatment in elaborately recreated habitats that teach visitors about the world's ecosystems and their species. Now your family can watch zebras and cheetahs roaming across grassy plains, turtles swimming in rivers stocked with fish, and wolves running through thick forests. Edge of Africa at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay in Florida is one zoo that certainly entertains as it educates animal-lovers.

TAMPA BAY, FLORIDA

Take a walk on the wild side at Edge of Africa, which opened in Florida in June 1997 at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay. At this 15-acre re-created savanna, families can see hyenas pluck fish from a pool, giraffes reach for a snack with their 20-inch tongues, and, in an underwater viewing area, hippos daintily dance in spite of their plump proportions. In the adjacent Serengeti Plain habitat, visitors can spot zebras, gazelles, and rhinos. Admission to Busch Gardens is $55.95 plus tax for visitors ages 10 and up, $45.95 plus tax for children ages three to nine, and free for kids under age three. Call 813-987-5082.
